NVIDIA Releases Surprise Driver Update for Kepler GPUs Running Older Windows Versions
In an unexpected move, NVIDIA has released a new driver (version 475.14) for its Kepler-based graphics cards. Surprisingly, this driver supports older, unsupported versions of the Windows operating system.
The Kepler architecture powered popular graphics card series like the GTX 600 and 700, as well as the Tesla series. First introduced in 2012, Kepler cards are reaching venerable ages. This new driver, however, doesn't introduce any new features. Instead, it focuses on addressing critical security vulnerabilities.
Key Points:
- Driver Version: 475.14 (non-WHQL certified)
- Supported GPUs: NVIDIA Kepler architecture (GTX 600, 700, Tesla)
- Supported OS: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 (unsupported versions)
- Purpose: Security fixes and critical bug fixes
For users running Windows 10 or 11, the latest Game Ready Driver (version 556.12 WHQL, released June 27, 2024) is recommended.
