NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Facing Potential Performance Downgrade

Rumors suggest NVIDIA may equip the GeForce RTX 4070 with slower GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR6X due to a supply shortage.

NVIDIA Might "Downgrade" GeForce RTX 4070's Video Memory Due to Shortages

Rumors are swirling that NVIDIA may be forced to make a tough decision regarding its GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card: reduce performance to combat a shortage of crucial components.

NVIDIA Might "Downgrade" GeForce RTX 4070's Video Memory Due to Shortages

According to the website Board Channels, NVIDIA is facing a potential shortage of GDDR6X memory chips, a vital component for the RTX 4070 and its more powerful siblings in the RTX 40 series. This shortage has reportedly led NVIDIA to reduce shipments of the affected cards to the Chinese market, with other regions potentially facing similar restrictions soon.

Board Channels states:

“By strictly controlling the order volume, it can ensure that the Chinese market can get the goods every month or quarter, and will not break the supply. The supply of RTX 4070 and above high-end graphics cards in August will be even tighter than in July. The main reason is that there may be a shortage of GDDR6X memory next month.”

Unofficial sources suggest that if the GDDR6X shortage becomes severe, NVIDIA may be forced to equip the RTX 4070 with standard GDDR6 memory instead. This change would unfortunately result in a noticeable decrease in performance.

NVIDIA has yet to officially comment on the situation, but more information about their plans is expected to surface in the coming weeks.
