A Piece of History: Original Windows 95 Copy Remains Unopened
Former Microsoft manager Brad Silverberg recently showed off a true collector's item: an unopened first edition copy of Windows 95. Silverberg, who worked at Microsoft in the 1990s and was directly involved in the OS's development, calls this pristine copy a "priceless souvenir" that he's carefully preserved all these years.
August 24th, 2024 will mark the 29th anniversary of Windows 95's release. The original OS came packaged on a set of 13 floppy disks – the very same format Silverberg's unopened copy comes in. And what makes this even more remarkable is that it's not just any original copy; it's the very first one off the production line, increasing its value significantly.
The Legacy of Windows 95
Windows 95 was a monumental success for Microsoft. Users embraced its new interface, multitasking capabilities, the introduction of the Start Menu, and the taskbar. It's fascinating to see how many of these elements, in some form, continue to exist in modern versions of the OS.
Furthermore, Windows 95 played a pivotal role in the growth of the gaming industry. It boosted computer hardware sales and encouraged the development and popularity of 32-bit software. Microsoft officially ended support for this iconic operating system back in 2001.
