AMD CEO Predicts AI Chips Will Replace GPUs Within 5 Years
AMD CEO Lisa Su has shared her insights on the future of the semiconductor industry, predicting that the rapid rise of AI will soon revolutionize computing, leading to the development of new and more efficient solutions.
“Right now, GPUs are a great choice for large language models because they’re very good at parallel processing, but they offer limited programmability. Do I believe that this will be the architecture five-plus years out? I think things will evolve,” said Su.
She believes that within five years, there will be a surge in the development of specialized chips specifically designed for AI computations, gradually replacing traditional GPUs. While GPUs won’t disappear entirely, the popularity of these AI-focused chips will continue to grow. Such chips are expected to be smaller, cheaper, and more powerful.
