Toshiba Unveils New HDDs with Capacities Up to 28TB
Toshiba has expanded its line of helium-filled hard disk drives (HDDs) with the introduction of two new models in the Mx11 series: the MG11 and MA11, boasting capacities up to 24TB and 28TB respectively. The company has revealed the technical specifications of these new drives and announced their release dates.
Both series of drives come in a standard 3.5-inch form factor and feature ten platters rotating in a helium-filled environment. However, they differ in their underlying technology. The MG11 utilizes conventional magnetic recording (CMR), while the MA11 leverages shingled magnetic recording (SMR). Both new models have a maximum rotational speed of 7200 RPM and up to 1GB of cache memory.
The Mx11 series is designed for 24/7 operation, handling a workload of 550TB per year. The drives boast an impressive mean time between failures (MTBF) of up to 2.5 million hours. The MA11 series will be available in 27TB and 28TB capacities, equipped with a SATA (6 Gbps) interface.
The MG11 series, on the other hand, supports a maximum sustained data transfer rate of 295 MB/s and offers both SATA (6 Gbps) and SAS (12 Gbps) interfaces. Capacities for the MG11 range from 14TB to 24TB.
Shipments of the MG11 series will commence in September, while the MA11 series is expected to hit the market in the fourth quarter of this year.
