Tech blogger Zack Nelson, known for his rigorous durability tests on his YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, put HUAWEI's first triple-folding phone, the HUAWEI Mate XT, through its paces. While it didn't survive the infamous durability gauntlet unscathed, the phone's unique design surprised even the seasoned tech reviewer.
Screen Durability:
As with most foldable phones, the Mate XT's display proved susceptible to scratches, even from fingernails. Nelson pointed out that the two creases on the screen, marking the folding points, were quite noticeable. Applying heat from a lighter quickly damaged the flexible panel.
Build Quality and Hinge Test:
The Mate XT features an aluminum frame and a faux leather back panel. Nelson found both materials easily scratched by a razor blade. A hinge test, where sand was poured onto the folding mechanism, revealed a potential weakness. The sand particles prevented the hinges from closing properly.
Folding the "Wrong" Way:
Due to the Mate XT's tri-folding design, one folded section of the screen always remains exposed. Nelson tested its resilience to potential pocket pressure. While a small stone didn't cause damage, the impact from a knife handle resulted in dead pixels and a blacked-out portion of the display.
Intrigued by the unusual design, Nelson attempted to fold the phone inward against its intended folding direction. The phone displayed a warning message advising against this action. However, Nelson proceeded, and the screen quickly broke.
Internal Complexity:
In the video's conclusion, Nelson disassembles the Mate XT, highlighting the intricate internal components and emphasizing the need for careful handling.
