The open-source Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx might have found a new lease of life after its shutdown in early October. A new fork of the project has appeared on GitHub, led by a developer known as GreemDev.
The original Ryujinx project, spearheaded by gdkchan, was taken down following an undisclosed offer from Nintendo. Speculation suggests Nintendo might have forced the shutdown, rather than offering a financial incentive.
A Fork with a Difference
GreemDev's Ryujinx fork initially continues where the original left off, but hints at future changes. Notably, the new project doesn't currently offer documentation, instead directing users to archived Ryujinx documentation on Archive.org. This is likely to minimize legal risks and reduce the workload on developers.
While other forks like Ryujinx-mirror exist, they are unlikely to receive further updates. The original Ryujinx was actively developed, boasting compatibility with over 3,550 games at the time of its closure. However, given Nintendo's strict copyright and anti-piracy stance, the future of this new fork remains uncertain.
Given Nintendo's history of protecting its intellectual property, it remains to be seen how long this new Ryujinx fork will last.
