Apple is reportedly entering the smart home market with a new AI-powered smart home display, expected to launch as early as March 2025. This "command center" device will act as a central hub for all compatible Apple devices and accessories.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the wall-mountable display will measure six inches diagonally, similar to an iPad mini, with bezels surrounding the screen. It will include a camera for FaceTime, built-in speakers, and a rechargeable battery, allowing it to function as a portable remote control.
The device's operating system will reportedly blend elements of the iPhone's StandBy mode and watchOS, with voice control (via Siri with Apple Intelligence) as the primary interaction method. Touch input will also be supported.
Key features and functionalities include:
- Dedicated Home screen for weather, widgets, and appointments.
- Slideshow option and home-centric controls.
- Software dock for apps and intercom functionality.
- Integration with home security cameras for video feeds.
- Built-in sensors for temperature and occupancy detection.
- Pre-installed apps like Safari, Apple News, Apple Music, Notes, Calendar, and Photos. (No dedicated App Store initially.)
The command center is expected to launch in Q1 2025, potentially alongside new MacBook Air and iPad Air models.
