The latest God of War Ragnarok patch for the PlayStation 5 Pro has been praised as one of the best updates yet. Analyzed by Digital Foundry, the patch introduces new options that offer insights into PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling, alongside substantial visual and performance enhancements.
The update replaces the standard Performance Mode with a PS5 Pro Enhanced mode. This new mode uncaps the framerate, allowing those with 120Hz VRR displays to enjoy a smoother experience consistently above 60 FPS, often reaching 100 FPS.
A key feature of the patch is the addition of new scaling options, including PSSR anti-aliasing alongside the existing TAA option. This allows players to directly compare the performance impact of PSSR. While PSSR improves image quality and distant detail perception using the same 1440p base resolution as TAA, it comes at a cost. In CPU-intensive scenarios, PSSR can reduce framerate by 10 FPS or more compared to TAA, confirming the 2ms per frame cost revealed in leaked documents.
The enhanced mode also includes all the visual features from the base game's Quality Mode, such as ray-traced scene-aligned cube maps (still not present in the PC version). These additions make the patch a significant upgrade for both performance and visuals on the PS5 Pro.
