While impressed by the new Mac mini's repairability, iFixit found the MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) disappointingly difficult to disassemble and repair, inheriting several design flaws from its predecessor. Disassembly still requires a Pentalobe screwdriver. Internally, the new MacBook Pro is similar to the previous model, with a larger heatsink and slightly different component placement. Disconnecting the touchpad, antenna, lid angle sensor, and other components requires removing screws in familiar locations. Several challenges hinder repairability: The battery cannot be removed without first detaching the touchpad, which blocks access to the adhesive pull tab. Removing the motherboard involves numerous screws and disconnecting various cables. Software locks complicate display and motherboard replacements.
