Apple is reportedly working on a significant upgrade to Siri for iOS 19, aiming to make its virtual assistant as capable as ChatGPT and potentially ending its partnership with OpenAI.
While iOS 18.2, expected next month, will introduce ChatGPT support to Siri, Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing its own large language models (LLMs). This "LLM Siri" will be a separate infrastructure, designed to hold more human-like conversations and handle complex tasks, similar to ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. It will also leverage App Intents for better control of third-party apps and integrate features from Apple Intelligence, such as text writing and summarization.
Apple is currently testing the new Siri internally. The enhanced Siri is expected to be announced at WWDC 2025 and released with iOS 19 and macOS 16 in 2026. This suggests Apple's ChatGPT integration is a temporary solution until its own technology is ready.
The move to in-house LLMs could allow Apple to offer a more integrated and seamless AI experience across its devices, but details remain scarce and delays are possible.
