M4 Ultra GPU Projected to Outperform RTX 4090 in OpenCL and Vulkan

Estimates suggest Apple's upcoming M4 Ultra GPU could beat the RTX 4090 in OpenCL and Vulkan benchmarks, based on M4 Pro and M4 Max performance.

Following the impressive performance of Apple's M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, new estimates suggest the upcoming M4 Ultra GPU could surpass the RTX 4090 in OpenCL and Vulkan benchmarks.

M4 Ultra GPU Projected to Outperform RTX 4090 in OpenCL and Vulkan

Based on leaked M4 Pro and Max scores, YouTuber Vadim Yuryev (Max Tech) projects the M4 Ultra to achieve a Geekbench 6 compute score of around 330,000. This estimation assumes a 70% performance scaling increase from the M4 Max, which scored 192,812. A more aggressive 78% scaling, as seen between the Pro and Max, would place the Ultra even higher, potentially reaching 385,624, according to another source.

These projected scores significantly exceed the RTX 4090's OpenCL score of 317,162 and Vulkan score of 262,907. However, it's crucial to consider several factors:

  • These are estimations based on a single benchmark and may not reflect real-world performance across various applications.
  • The M4 Ultra, while powerful, may not have access to the same range of flagship gaming titles available on PC.
  • Apple could adjust performance scaling before the M4 Ultra's release.

The M4 Ultra is expected to launch next year with the new Mac Pro and Mac Studio.
