OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirms there will be no GPT-5 release in 2024, as the company shifts its focus to developing GPT-o1.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that there will be no GPT-5 release in 2024. Instead, the company will concentrate on developing GPT-o1, previously known as "Project Strawberry."

During a recent Reddit AMA, Altman revealed that while OpenAI has several major releases planned for later this year, GPT-5 is not among them. He explained that the increasing complexity of these models makes parallel development challenging. Resource allocation is also a factor, as the company needs to prioritize its computing power.

"All of these models have gotten quite complex and we can't ship as many things in parallel as we'd like to...We also face...limitations...about where we allocate...our computers towards." - Sam Altman

GPT-o1 distinguishes itself by taking a more methodical and slower approach to development, focusing on accuracy and logical reasoning for tasks in mathematics, science, and other demanding fields.

Altman also shared OpenAI's vision for AI "agents" capable of performing tasks autonomously on behalf of users. This could revolutionize how people interact with AI, moving beyond information retrieval towards task completion.

Finally, Altman hinted at the possibility of enabling NSFW (Not Safe For Work) adult content in the future, allowing for more unrestricted interactions with AI. However, this remains a future consideration due to the potential challenges involved.
