Rumors are circulating that Sony is in discussions to acquire Kadokawa Corporation, the owner of renowned game developer FromSoftware. According to Reuters, two sources have indicated a potential deal could be finalized in the coming weeks, sending Kadokawa's stock soaring by nearly 23%.
Kadokawa Corporation, founded shortly after World War II, has diverse holdings in publishing, film, anime, and manga. Its ownership of nearly 70% of FromSoftware, the studio behind hit titles like Elden Ring, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, makes it a particularly attractive target for Sony.
This rumor follows previous collaborations between Sony and Kadokawa. In 2021, they formed a capital alliance, and in 2022, Sony invested directly in FromSoftware, acquiring around 14% of its shares. Following this investment, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst hinted at broader collaborations, including game development and adaptations through PlayStation Productions.
Speculation about adaptations of FromSoftware properties, potentially including an Elden Ring film or TV series, has also been fueled by comments from author George R.R. Martin, who contributed to the game's lore.
While the implications for FromSoftware's multiplatform releases remain unclear, Sony's handling of Bungie, which continues to develop for other platforms after its acquisition, suggests a similar approach might be taken.
