Recent reports from sources on X (formerly Twitter) suggest that Tesla's refreshed Model Y, codenamed "Juniper," may launch earlier than anticipated. Production lines at Giga Shanghai are reportedly now accommodating both the current Model Y and the Juniper variant, hinting at a January 2025 release instead of the previously rumored March 2025 timeframe.
The Model Y Juniper is expected to bring design and technology upgrades. However, Tesla faces challenges in California, where the state government plans to exclude the company from its EV rebate program. This could increase the Juniper's price by $7,500 in California, potentially impacting sales. This situation is further complicated by the federal government's rollback of EV tax credits.
Tesla's 4680 battery technology, intended for the Juniper, has also faced skepticism regarding its cost-effectiveness. Despite this, Tesla remains confident in scaling its 4680 battery production in the U.S.
The Model Y Juniper's launch will be a crucial test for Tesla in an increasingly competitive EV market.
