This change, noticed on the official The Game Awards website, aims to recognize "the best creative and technical work regardless of format." A jury will select the nominees and ultimately decide the winner.

Many believe this rule change was implemented due to the release of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Previously, DLC was ineligible for the Game of the Year award. Now, Shadow of the Erdtree has a chance to win the top prize.

The Game Awards 2024 will take place on December 13th. Nominees will be announced on November 18th.
