Valve has announced that the legacy Steam library sharing feature will be retired in early 2025. The new Steam Family feature, introduced in September, will fully replace the old system.
Steam Family offers several improvements over the legacy system, including:
- Multiple family members can play shared games simultaneously (though not the same game at the same time).
- Offline play is supported for shared games.
- Separate save games and achievements for each family member.
Up to five family members can be added to a Steam Family sharing group. While simultaneous play of the same game requires separate copies, the new system offers more flexibility for families.
Users can configure Steam Family in the "Family Management" tab under "Account details." Valve also provides a helpful guide to assist with setup.
