In a recent interview with Games Radar, Activision Blizzard Game Director Ion Hazzikostas discussed the potential for a World of Warcraft sequel. While a "WoW 2" has always been dismissed in the past, Hazzikostas' latest statement suggests it might not be entirely off the table.
World of Warcraft remains a dominant force in the MMO genre, with its latest expansion, The War Within, launching in August 2024, and the next expansion, Midnight, set to be revealed in summer 2025. Despite this ongoing success, discussions about a sequel often arise due to the game's aging graphics and combat system.
Hazzikostas offered a surprisingly open-minded response to the question of a WoW successor:
"Theoretically, at some long, distant point down the line, that may be a question we grapple with seriously," he says. "But, for the time being, we have a huge, vibrant, and growing player community that we're excited to serve."
He emphasized that Blizzard's current focus is on supporting the existing WoW community:
"When we have this vibrant world with millions of players, our priority is to serve them as best we can - to keep expanding the journeys, the worlds we build, and every step of the way we make the improvements we think will best appeal to the modern audience."
While a WoW 2 isn't imminent, Hazzikostas' comments suggest it's a possibility Blizzard might consider in the future.
