Worlds Untold, the sci-fi game studio founded by former Mass Effect writer and director Mac Walters, has paused development on its project after parting ways with publisher NetEase. This news comes shortly after the closure of Casey Hudson's Humanoid Origin studio.
Walters announced the news on LinkedIn, explaining that the studio is seeking a new partner to continue development:
...we’ve made the very difficult decision to pause operations at Worlds Untold while we search for a new partner...This was not a decision we made lightly...In the meantime, our incredible team members will be exploring new opportunities.
Walters expressed gratitude for the support received and hinted at the project's eventual return:
This is a heartbreaking moment...but I’m deeply grateful...While we’re pausing for now, this isn’t goodbye—there’s more to come...
In a previous interview, Walters described the game as a story-driven, linear action/adventure inspired by titles like The Last of Us and Uncharted, rather than a traditional RPG:
I've done RPGs and I love them, but I wanted to do something that led with story...I really wanted to focus on building a game that allowed me to tell a great adventure story.
