Apple is reportedly planning a major display upgrade for its 2026 MacBook Pro lineup. According to research firm Omdia, the new models will transition to larger OLED screens with improved brightness, contrast, and battery life. The iconic notch is also expected to be replaced by a hole-punch camera, possibly incorporating the iPhone's Dynamic Island feature.
Larger OLED Displays
The 2026 MacBook Pros will reportedly feature 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch Hybrid OLED displays, slightly larger than the current 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch Mini LED screens. These new displays will utilize RGB Tandem and Oxide TFT technology and support Dynamic Frame Rate.
OLED Advantages
The shift to OLED technology promises several benefits, including:
- Brighter displays
- Improved contrast with deeper blacks
- Enhanced battery efficiency
- Potential for thinner designs
M5 Chip Upgrade in 2025
Before the OLED transition, the 2025 MacBook Pro models are expected to receive a chip upgrade to the new M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max.
MacBook Air to Follow
Omdia suggests that OLED screens will remain exclusive to the MacBook Pro for two years, with the MacBook Air adopting the technology in 2028.
Dynamic Island and Design Changes
The removal of the notch is expected to create a more seamless display experience, with more space for the macOS menu bar. Details about the implementation of the hole-punch camera and Dynamic Island are still scarce.
