Apple is reportedly set to significantly improve the AirTag with its second-generation model. The AirTag 2 will feature an upgraded ultrawide-band chip, which is expected to triple the tracking range, making it much easier to locate lost or misplaced items.
New Ultrawide-Band Chip
According to Mark Gurman's latest "Power On" newsletter, the AirTag 2's ultrawide-band chip will be on par with the ones found in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. This upgrade will result in a much greater tracking range than the current model.
"...the next AirTag will be getting a new ultrawide-band chip on par with the one introduced in the iPhone 15. That will considerably increase the range of the new AirTag...Right now, the AirTag can be located with Precision Finding from about 10 to 30 meters away, depending on conditions. The new model should triple that by using the next-generation ultrawide-band chip..."
The current AirTag has a typical Precision Finding range of 10 to 30 meters. The AirTag 2 is expected to achieve approximately triple that range.
Potential Price Increase
It is unknown if the upgraded chip will cause a price increase for the AirTag 2. However, even with a premium price tag, the increased range is likely to make it a very popular product.
If you're happy with the existing range, the original AirTag 4-pack is available for $72.99 on Amazon. You can also purchase a single AirTag for $24.
