AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE Discontinues Reaches End-of-Life

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE, initially launched in China, has reached end-of-life status just months after expanding to European markets.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card has reportedly reached end-of-life (EOL) status, according to multiple AMD board partners contacted by Tweakers. This comes just months after the card's expansion into European markets, following its initial exclusive launch in China in 2023.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE Reaches End-of-Life

Tweakers reports that the supply of the RX 7900 GRE is rapidly diminishing in retail channels. While some ASUS models are still available, the manufacturer has indicated that deliveries are currently "limited." AMD has not responded to requests for comment regarding the discontinuation.

Specifications and Rationale

The RX 7900 GRE is based on AMD's RDNA 3 architecture, featuring 80 Compute Units (CUs) and 16GB of GDDR6 memory, operating at a 260W TDP. Its discontinuation aligns with AMD's preparations for its next-generation RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 8000 series GPUs.

This move could be part of AMD's strategy to clear remaining inventory before the launch of the RX 8000 series, which is expected to target the mid-range segment, competing with NVIDIA's "Blackwell" and Intel's "Battlemage" architectures. AMD is scheduled to unveil the new cards during its CES keynote on January 6th in Las Vegas.

The timing of this EOL announcement will certainly raise questions and we'll have to wait and see what AMD unveils before fully understanding their decision.
