Apple is working on its own 5G modems to replace Qualcomm as its supplier, starting with the iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air, and entry-level iPad models next year. The transition will take several years, with three different modem variants planned.
Three 5G Modem Variants
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is developing three versions of its custom 5G modem:
1. Entry-Level Modem (2025)
- Will debut in the iPhone SE 4, iPhone 17 Air, and entry-level iPad in 2025.
- Will not support mmWave technology.
- Expected to be less powerful than Qualcomm's current offerings.
- Benefits include tight integration with Apple chips for better power efficiency and satellite connectivity support.
- Theoretical speeds of up to 4 Gbps.
- Dual-SIM and dual-standby functionality.
2. High-End Modem (2026)
- Planned for the iPhone 18 Pro and high-end iPad Pro models in 2026.
- Will support mmWave technology.
- Expected to be more competitive with Qualcomm's modems in terms of performance and features.
- Theoretical speeds of up to 6 Gbps.
3. Advanced Modem (Future)
- Aims to surpass Qualcomm in performance, efficiency, and AI capabilities.
- Timing and specific details are yet to be revealed.
Apple's motivation for developing its own modems is partly to reduce reliance on Qualcomm and lower costs. The long-term goal is to integrate the modem directly into the iPhone's A-series chips.
