Apple is reportedly working on a foldable iPad that, when fully opened, will be the size of two large-screen tablets placed side-by-side. According to a new report, this innovative device could launch in 2028.
While foldable devices haven't yet achieved mainstream popularity, Apple is still moving forward with its development. The main challenge for Apple has been eliminating the visible crease that plagues most foldable devices.
Progress on Crease Reduction
According to Mark Gurman's "Power On" newsletter, Apple has made significant progress on its foldable iPad prototypes, with the devices featuring a nearly invisible crease. Apple's designers are aiming to create a device that opens to the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side. However, it's still too early to know if Apple can eliminate the crease entirely.
“Apple designers are developing something akin to a giant iPad that unfolds into the size of two iPad Pros side-by-side… Prototypes of this new product within Apple’s industrial design group have a nearly invisible crease.” - Mark Gurman
iPadOS Likely Operating System
The foldable iPad is expected to run on iPadOS, or a version of it. Gurman does not believe Apple will develop a hybrid OS, suggesting that by 2028, iPadOS will be capable of running most macOS apps. Apple previously abandoned a foldable MacBook with a 20.25-inch display and is now focusing on an 18.8-inch version for mass production.
