Apple's redesigned HomePod, featuring a smart home display, has been delayed and is now expected to launch in the latter half of 2025. The delay is reportedly due to software development challenges, not hardware issues.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new HomePod will feature a 6- to 7-inch display, smaller than earlier rumors suggested. This display will be the primary interface for interacting with the device. It will be powered by the A18 chip and is expected to integrate Apple's AI features, working with an enhanced version of Siri.
While the hardware is reportedly ready, Apple is facing technical hurdles with the software. The device is rumored to run a dedicated operating system, potentially called "homeOS," which will receive regular updates similar to other Apple products.
The delay pushes the launch to the second half of 2025, potentially aligning with Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) where the company could showcase the device's capabilities and unveil homeOS alongside iOS 19. This timing would also allow Apple to highlight its advancements in Apple Intelligence.
The new HomePod is expected to be a central hub for HomeKit-enabled accessories, acting as an all-in-one solution for smart home management. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported similar information, suggesting a square-shaped display with thick bezels akin to the iPad. Initial shipments are estimated at around 500,000 units, with Tianma Microelectronics as the exclusive display supplier.
