Tesla Model Y owner Omid Sadegpour has developed DartSolar, a portable solar charging system that can be mounted on the roof of any electric vehicle, offering a free and convenient way to charge your EV anywhere.
How DartSolar Works
The DartSolar system consists of a 960W solar array, assembled from six 160W panels. These panels are protected by an ETFE-fiberglass coating, enhancing their durability. They are grouped into three separate units mounted on a telescopic stainless steel pole, and reinforced with 4mm aluminum frames. The system is designed to be easily deployed and folded as needed.
With this setup, an EV can generate up to 5 kWh per day, providing enough energy for a 16-32 km (10-20 mile) drive. The system also features an integrated 120V outlet, allowing users to power tools or other devices.
Improved Design and Efficiency
The production version of DartSolar has improved aerodynamics compared to earlier prototypes. In tests conducted on a Tesla Model Y at 21°C and 3 bar tire pressure, the system showed only a minimal increase (1-2%) in aerodynamic drag. The system is designed for a 10-year lifespan and is priced at $2950.
