Datamined Witcher 3 Quest Reveals Cut Cyberpunk 2077 Crossover

Modders have discovered a cut quest in The Witcher 3 where Geralt would have teleported to Cyberpunk 2077's Night City.

Modders working on the ambitious "What Lies Unseen" project, which explores The Witcher 3's development history, have unearthed a fascinating discarded quest: an early version of "Through Time and Space" where Geralt and Avallac'h would have travelled to Cyberpunk 2077's Night City.

Datamined Witcher 3 Quest Reveals Cut Cyberpunk 2077 Crossover

A Cyberpunk 2077 Detour

The datamined script reveals a significantly different "Through Time and Space" than the final version. Instead of beginning in Novigrad, the quest would have started in a Redanian garrison. The first portal would have transported Geralt and Avallac'h to Night City, resulting in the following dialogue:

Geralt: "What... What is this place? Is this the afterlife?"
Avallac'h: "No. Just another of the realities the Spiral leads through... Technologically advanced, but broken. Dying."
Geralt: "Disgusting. This stench, noise... How can you live here?!"
Avallac'h: "You should know better. This world is inhabited by humans, not elves."

The "What Lies Unseen" team notes that CD Projekt Red developers have previously expressed interest in such a crossover. While the specifics of the Night City encounter remain unclear, it would have included a planned easter egg involving Geralt giving Novigrad coins to a panhandler who later appears wealthy in Cyberpunk 2077.

A Missed Opportunity?

While this crossover would have been exciting, the team suggests that it might have been detrimental to later, more subtle efforts to link the Witcher and Cyberpunk universes. These efforts include a complex in-game puzzle in Cyberpunk 2077 that connects to a hidden room in The Witcher 3.

The team also points out the fun implication that Geralt's dimension-hopping makes all crossovers canon, including appearances in other games like Monster Hunter and Soul Calibur.
