Despite a lackluster first impression, the newly released free-to-play FPS Delta Force offers surprisingly engaging large-scale combat reminiscent of Battlefield 3 at its peak.
Delta Force offers two main modes: Warfare, a 32v32 combined arms mode with various objectives, and Operations, an extraction shooter similar to Escape From Tarkov. While Operations feels shallow, Warfare shines with its chaotic and engaging battles.
Warfare Mode: A Battlefield Successor?
The game's maps, designed for 64 players, create intense firefights reminiscent of classic Battlefield moments. The Rush-like Attack and Defend mode and the Conquest-style King of the Hill offer varied and exciting gameplay.
While visually similar to Battlefield 2042, Delta Force arguably surpasses it in the feel of its combat. Vehicles and individual soldiers feel less overpowered, creating a more tactical and satisfying experience.
Deep Customization and Identity Crisis
Delta Force features an incredibly deep weapon customization system, allowing players to tweak nearly every aspect of their weapons. However, the game struggles with its identity as a hero shooter, with its bland characters failing to capture much interest.
Despite this, Delta Force has already achieved impressive player numbers, suggesting its engaging gameplay might be enough to overcome its lack of character depth. It's currently the best large-scale multiplayer shooter in years.
