Google Docs Gets AI-Powered Document Creation

Creating Documents with Gemini AI

Users can initiate document creation by clicking "Help me create" and providing a short prompt describing the desired document. To utilize existing files as a basis, users should include the filename, preceded by "@" (e.g., `@report.docx`).

The AI can assist in generating various document types, including:

  • Proposals
  • Project trackers
  • Document ideas
  • Blog posts
  • Press releases
  • Campaign briefs
  • Dinner party menus
  • Newsletters
  • Itineraries
  • And more...

Limitations

Currently, the feature has some limitations:

  • It cannot incorporate web search results or content directly from Workspace files.
  • It cannot generate cover images or inline images of people.
  • It only extracts content from files; it cannot copy the structure or style of those files.
  • It's currently limited to new documents and desktop users.
  • It is available only in Google Workspace Alpha and Google Workspace Labs.

This AI-powered feature is gradually rolling out.
