Grand Theft Auto IV distinguished itself from other entries in the series with a darker tone and some notable omissions in gameplay mechanics. Developer Obbe Vermeij has now shed light on the reasons behind the absence of controllable tanks and planes.
Vermeij explained that the decision stemmed from a desire for increased realism. With the shift in style, the developers wanted activities to feel grounded in what protagonist Niko Bellic would realistically do and want. Furthermore, tanks were deemed too out of place in Liberty City. However, players could still pilot helicopters.
This isn't the first time Vermeij has offered insights into the development of GTA games. He has previously discussed various behind-the-scenes details, such as the cause of erratic car behavior in GTA IV, the garbage issue in GTA III, and the mystery of disappearing vehicles.
