The HDMI Forum has announced it will reveal new specifications for the HDMI standard at CES 2025, potentially introducing HDMI 2.2 with increased bandwidth.
According to a press release shared by Dday, the new specifications will support “a wide range of higher resolutions and refresh rates, enabled by a new HDMI cable.” This suggests either a refined spec for the existing standard or the introduction of a new cable. Multiple sources indicate this may be the arrival of HDMI 2.2.
Potential for Higher Resolutions and Refresh Rates
The current HDMI 2.1 specification supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth, enabling resolutions up to 10240×4320 at 120 Hz with DSC (Display Stream Compression). Increasing the bandwidth could allow for even higher resolutions and refresh rates without DSC.
Competition with DisplayPort 2.1
The DisplayPort 2.1 standard already offers up to 80 Gbps bandwidth (UHBR20), and the upcoming RTX 50 series is expected to support this. While AMD has adopted DisplayPort 2.1, the current Radeon RX 8000 series supports only UHBR10, and the Radeon PRO series supports UHBR13.5. Intel's Arc Battlemage GPUs support UHBR13.5.
The HDMI Forum is scheduled to unveil the new specifications on January 6, one day before CES 2025 officially opens on January 7.
