The recent Omens of Tyranny update for Helldivers 2 introduced the Illuminate invasion, along with a new Fast Recon Vehicle (FRV). This four-person vehicle, inspired by off-road vehicles, features a mounted gun and allows players to lean out and shoot. However, careless driving can result in your squad ragdolling across the terrain.
Key things to know about FRVs
- FRVs are not yet available as a Stratagem; you need to find them on the map.
- FRVs have two possible control schemes, one more challenging than the other.
Where to find a Fast Recon Vehicle
Currently, FRVs can be found in the new urban districts called colonies, introduced with the Omens of Tyranny update. You'll encounter these in Illuminate missions, currently on Calypso. Look for the car icon with a machine gun on your map.
In the future, FRVs will become a Stratagem available for all mission types. Arrowhead Game Studios mentioned this ability will be tied to the successful completion of a Major Order and might cost 20,000 Req points or more.
How to Drive the Fast Recon Vehicle
Helldivers 2 now features two accessibility settings by default: "Auto Reverse Vehicles" and "Reverse Gear Inverts Throttle". With these on, the car will control like typical video game vehicles. Holding the gas moves the car forward and holding the brake makes the car reverse.
However, if you turn those settings off, you'll need to manually shift gears to reverse using the gearbox controls (Control and Shift on keyboard, L2 and R2 on controller) and then press the gas (W on keyboard, RT on controller). This more realistic driving experience requires you to carefully engage gears as you would with a real vehicle.
"We want to put the player into a situation where they're challenged by the core experience to some degree...We want somebody to become really, really good at driving a car." - Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead COO.
This more challenging control scheme can lead to fun and chaotic moments, especially when trying to maneuver the FRV in hectic situations. Getting stuck in neutral or revving the engine without moving will become a new learning curve for players.
