Rumors of a Sony PlayStation handheld capable of playing PS5 games locally have gained further traction thanks to comments from Digital Foundry's John Linneman. This follows an initial report from Bloomberg.
Linneman confirmed that Digital Foundry had heard about the device before Bloomberg's report, but refrained from commenting earlier. While he believes the handheld's release might be further off than initially anticipated, he suggests that early prototypes could already exist. He points to the PlayStation Portal as an example, noting that it was in development for several years before its 2023 launch.
However, as Bloomberg's report cautioned, Sony could still cancel the project. Technical limitations and the challenge of optimizing PS5 games for a less powerful handheld device are significant hurdles. If cancelled, the project could potentially evolve into a successor to the PlayStation Portal, which is primarily a PS5 game streaming device rather than a standalone handheld.
