Keanu Reeves's involvement in the upcoming video game anthology series, Secret Level, was a fortunate coincidence, thanks to his admiration for the animated anthology "Love, Death + Robots."
Director Tim Miller, in an interview with GamesRadar+, revealed how Reeves joined the project. During a visit to Blur Studio to discuss a different project, Reeves expressed his fondness for "Love, Death + Robots" to Miller, who then offered him a role in the similar video game-themed anthology.
"I told him we were working on another similar project and asked if he wanted to join, to which he replied, 'Absolutely.' I asked if he had any role preferences — but no, he was ready to participate in any case, 'Please, coach, pick me,' like that. So I asked producer Dave [Wilson]: 'If you were picking a role for Keanu Reeves, which character would he get?' At first, Dave thought I was just joking.” - Tim Miller
However, casting Reeves proved challenging as most roles were already filled. Producer Dave Wilson explained:
"We already had all the walls covered with art, and almost all the roles were either already taken or close to being approved. And I say: 'Tim, I don't have any roles.'" - Dave Wilson
Fortunately, the team rearranged things to accommodate Reeves. However, not all actors were so lucky; one British actor will have to wait for the second season. Secret Level premieres on Amazon Prime Video on December 10th.
