MNT Reform Next: Modular Laptop with Mechanical Keyboard

The MNT Reform Next challenges the Framework Laptop 13 with its modular, open-source design featuring a mechanical keyboard.

The MNT Reform Next, a new open-source notebook, is positioned as an alternative to modular laptops like the Framework Laptop 13. It stands out with its open-standard hardware and a focus on user customizability.

MNT Reform Next: Modular Laptop with Mechanical Keyboard

Unlike the Framework Laptop 13 with its proprietary modules, the MNT Reform Next boasts open-source hardware and firmware. This allows for extensive modification, making it a great option for those who like to tinker.

Key Features

The MNT Reform Next emphasizes modularity and user repairability. Key features include:

  • Mechanical keyboard with Kailh Choc Brown switches and RGB lighting
  • 12.5-inch 1080p IPS display
  • Replaceable battery and motherboard
  • Modular ports (USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, 3.5mm headphone jack)

The MNT Reform Next is powered by a Rockchip RK3588 CPU with four Cortex-A76 and four Cortex-A55 ARM cores. This processor is less powerful than current Intel and AMD offerings but is power-efficient, allowing for silent operation without a fan. The laptop also supports Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 and ships with Debian Linux.

Drawbacks

The modular design adds to the device's bulk, making it a bit heavy at 1.6 kg (3.5 lb) and 2.6 cm (1.02 in) thick. Additionally, the Rockchip processor is less powerful compared to current-gen CPUs from Intel and AMD.

Price and Availability

The MNT Reform Next is currently being crowdfunded on Crowd Supply and has already met its funding goal.

The base model, with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of eMMC storage, is priced at $1,099. The "Hyper" version with 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD is priced at $1,599. MNT Research offers free worldwide shipping; however, potential buyers should factor in import taxes and duties.
