Modretro Chromatic's Sapphire Screen Tested by JerryRigEverything

The Modretro Chromatic, a Game Boy Color recreation, has its sapphire-grade screen and durability tested by JerryRigEverything.

The Modretro Chromatic, a recreation of the Game Boy Color, claims to offer a faithful retro gaming experience with the added benefit of a backlit, sapphire-grade display. YouTuber JerryRigEverything put these claims to the test.

Modretro markets the Chromatic as the "ultimate retro cartridge gaming console," compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. The screen size and resolution match the original GBC, but Modretro claims the "sapphire" screen offers superior scratch resistance.

JerryRigEverything's Zach Nelson tested the display's scratch resistance, confirming it scratches at level 8, higher than the typical level 7. The Chromatic's "magnesium alloy" shell also passed the bend test. Its size, shape, and even the tri-wing screws are reminiscent of the original GBC.

The Chromatic retains the original console's functionality, including the use of AA batteries (a promised USB-C rechargeable battery pack is yet to be released). Drawbacks include the soldered-in coin battery for game saves and the glued-on sapphire cover, which complicates repairs.

The Modretro Chromatic is available for order directly from Modretro for $199/€190.95.
