Musk: Optimus Robots, Not Cars, Are Tesla's Future

Elon Musk reportedly told TSMC's chairman that Tesla's future is focused on Optimus robots, not cars, during a recent meeting.

Elon Musk has reportedly stated that Tesla's future is primarily focused on its humanoid robot, Optimus, rather than its electric vehicles. This revelation comes from a recent, secret meeting between Musk and TSMC Chairman, CC Wei.

Dojo Chip Production

During the meeting, Musk emphasized the need for TSMC to allocate sufficient production capacity to manufacture Tesla's Dojo chip, which uses a 5nm process and InFO-SoW advanced packaging. This chip is critical for Tesla's neural network training needs as they pursue full autonomy.

"Don't be nervous, as long as you are willing to pay, your chip must [sic] be there." - CC Wei, TSMC Chairman, reportedly to Elon Musk

Optimus as the Primary Focus

According to reports, Musk informed Wei that Tesla's future direction would be primarily centered around the Optimus robot rather than its cars. It's important to clarify that, while the report suggests that Dojo chip will be in both EVs and robots, the Dojo is mainly for neural network training. The Optimus robot and FSD systems currently use the AI4 chip, and the AI5 chip is expected in 2025.

Optimus Capabilities and Deployment

Tesla plans to deploy around 1,000 Optimus robots in its factories by the end of 2025. The Optimus robot is capable of:

  • Performing menial, labor-intensive tasks
  • Mapping and navigating obstacles
  • Tracking objects
  • Picking up delicate objects with tactile finger sensors

Financial Projections

Deutsche Bank estimates that Tesla's Optimus robot could bring in $10 billion in annual revenue by 2035, based on a sales volume of 200,000 units at an average price of $50,000.
