Price Hikes and Discontinuation
Released nearly two years ago, the RTX 4090 was expected to see price reductions as its lifecycle neared its end. Instead, the discontinuation has led to substantial price hikes. Retailers like Newegg and Amazon show limited availability, with prices exceeding $2500 and some models reaching over $3500. B&H Photo has listed all RTX 4090 models as discontinued, while Best Buy shows them as "Sold Out."
This trend isn't confined to the US; the EU and UK are experiencing similar price increases and stock shortages. While limited availability before a new generation launch is common, it's unusual to see such significant price hikes instead of the typical price drops to clear existing inventory.
Reasons for the Price Surge
The RTX 4090 has been produced in relatively low quantities since the latter half of 2024, and its production halt in October/November further exacerbated the situation. With depleted supplies, it appears that AIBs and retailers are shifting focus to the RTX 5090, leaving a vacuum for refurbished and used models in the market.
