OpenAI is celebrating the holiday season with a 12-day special event called "Shipmas," packed with announcements of new products and features. Among these, the highly anticipated generative AI video model, Sora, might finally make its debut.
CEO Sam Altman confirmed the 12 days of announcements at the New York Times' DealBook conference. While he didn't reveal specific products, he promised both minor and major news over the two-week period.
Prior to the official announcement, OpenAI employees hinted at "Shipmas" on social media, fueling speculation among users. Even Bill Peebles, the lead for Sora, seemed to confirm OpenAI's comeback.

12 livestreams.
A bunch of new things, big and small.
12 Days of OpenAI starts tomorrow.
Sora's public launch was delayed due to controversies surrounding artist protests and extended testing. However, its release now appears imminent, with Shipmas offering a likely launch window. This comes after Google launched its own generative AI video model, Veo, in private preview, despite OpenAI's earlier demonstration of similar capabilities.
Other potential Shipmas announcements include a Santa voice for ChatGPT, suggested by a recent update replacing the voice mode button with a snowflake icon.
