Qualcomm Eyes Dual-Sourcing with Samsung & TSMC for 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3

Qualcomm is reportedly working with Samsung to develop a 2nm prototype for its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 chip, aiming for dual-sourcing with TSMC.

Qualcomm is reportedly optimistic about establishing a dual-sourcing approach for its chip manufacturing, with both Samsung and TSMC potentially producing future Snapdragon processors. The company is pushing Samsung to develop a 2nm prototype of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 by the second half of 2026.

Samsung's 2nm Technology

Despite previous struggles with its 3nm GAA technology, which led Qualcomm to exclusively partner with TSMC for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, Samsung is reportedly making strides with its 2nm process, codenamed ‘Ulysses’. Qualcomm is said to be aware of Samsung's 2nm progress, and this could pave the way for the Korean company to win orders for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3.

Samsung's production setbacks have also reportedly led to the Exynos 2500 being delayed, meaning the Galaxy S25 series will launch exclusively with the Snapdragon 8 Elite. This puts extra pressure on Samsung to improve its production yields.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 Prototype

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 3 is not expected until Q4 2026, however, Qualcomm is preparing Samsung to develop a 2nm prototype by H2 2026. If the prototype meets Qualcomm's expectations and Samsung can demonstrate reliable wafer output, the company could become a key supplier. Qualcomm is also exploring the use of dual-sourcing for reasons of cost and stability.

Having multiple suppliers provides greater flexibility and potentially reduces costs. The high price of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 is expected to impact smartphone profits, making the dual-sourcing approach a desirable move for Qualcomm. However, it's still early to confirm Samsung's comeback, and this rumor should be treated with caution.
