Roblox has announced that users can now receive a 25% bonus when buying Robux directly through the Roblox website, on PC, or using gift cards. This effectively means users purchasing Robux through in-app purchases on mobile or through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store will receive less Robux for the same price.
For example, a $10 purchase would now yield 1,000 Robux instead of 800 when using the preferred methods. Roblox highlighted this change as a way to benefit creators, as the Robux to real-money exchange rate for creators remains unchanged.
While the official announcement didn't provide specific reasons for the change or its timing, it's speculated that this move aims to bypass the commission fees charged by Apple and Google on in-app purchases. Apple takes a 15-30% cut, while Google takes a 30% cut for most purchases. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney praised Roblox for "fighting the Apple tax."
Although not explicitly stated, purchasing Robux on PC likely refers to purchases made directly through the Roblox website or possibly the Microsoft Store, which typically takes a 12% cut. The announcement did not address purchases made through the Microsoft Store for PC or Xbox.
Roblox stated that they are looking for opportunities to improve value for users on Android and iOS, but for now, the bonus is only available through the website, PC purchases, and gift cards. Users primarily playing on mobile can still utilize these methods to purchase Robux with the bonus.
