Japanese scientists have developed a two-step solar reactor that increases clean hydrogen production efficiency, paving the way for sustainable fuel.
Researchers at Shinshu University, Japan, have developed a novel two-step reactor system that produces hydrogen fuel from sunlight and water. This innovative approach has achieved a 50% higher efficiency in real-world conditions compared to laboratory tests. The 1,076-square-foot reactor utilizes photocatalytic panels in a two-step process to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This method differs from traditional one-step systems by separating hydrogen and oxygen production into distinct phases. This results in improved solar-to-hydrogen conversion rates compared to conventional methods that often rely on natural gas. During real-world testing under natural sunlight, the reactor exceeded expectations, demonstrating a 50% higher solar energy conversion efficiency than in lab conditions.
