With increasing numbers of automakers adopting the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector for their electric vehicles, Tesla's technology is poised to become the de facto charging standard in the United States. This move is further solidified by recent statements from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
During a keynote address at the Merge 2024 event, Kristin White, Acting Administrator of the FHWA, indicated that the J3400 connector and port combo (the open-source equivalent of NACS) is set to become the federal standard. This announcement comes shortly after SAE International certified J3400 for use by all.
While the official announcement is expected after an FHWA webinar on December 17th, White's statement strongly suggests that NACS/J3400 will be the standard moving forward.
This standardization is crucial for the expansion of EV charging infrastructure, particularly in light of President Biden's National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which aims to build 500,000 chargers nationwide using federal funds.
With Nissan recently joining the growing list of automakers embracing NACS, and most manufacturers pledging to adopt the standard from 2025 onwards, the widespread adoption of J3400 connectors will streamline charger development and potentially accelerate EV adoption.
