The Thaumaturge Review
Fool's Theory, the studio behind the upcoming Witcher remake, has released The Thaumaturge, a historical isometric RPG set in 1905 Warsaw. This review explores whether it lives up to the hype and serves as a strong precursor to their bigger project.
A Unique Setting and Engaging Story
The Thaumaturge throws players into the politically charged atmosphere of early 20th-century Warsaw, blending historical accuracy with a touch of dark magic. You play as Wiktor Szulski, a thaumaturge who uses the power of "salutors" – entities tied to people's flaws – to influence others. The story, centered around Wiktor's inheritance and various intertwined plots, is compelling and rarely feels overwhelming.
Wiktor's personality is well-developed, allowing for some player agency in shaping his character. Meaningful choices impact the narrative, leading to multiple endings. The abundance of side content adds significant replayability. The game's world is meticulously crafted, rewarding exploration and curiosity.
Gameplay and Mechanics
The game's detective elements involve investigating "traces" left by characters, piecing together clues to advance quests. While not overly complex, the solid writing keeps this engaging. Combat is turn-based, focusing on depleting enemy focus and exploiting weaknesses using salutor abilities. While functional, the combat system feels somewhat limited, particularly the mundane enemies.
Technically, the game has mixed results. The overworld visuals, powered by Unreal Engine 5, are impressive. However, character models and cutscenes have inconsistencies. Performance issues, primarily stuttering after loading screens, detract from the experience.
Verdict: A Strong Showing
The Thaumaturge, while not perfect, offers a unique blend of historical setting, engaging characters, and compelling storytelling. Despite some technical rough edges and a limited combat system, it's a noteworthy RPG. Its strong points point towards a promising future for Fool's Theory's Witcher remake.
