TSMC Founder Criticizes Intel's Business Strategy

TSMC founder Morris Chang criticizes Intel's focus on foundry services, suggesting they should have prioritized AI instead.

TSMC founder Morris Chang has criticized Intel's business strategy, stating that the company should not have entered the chipmaking business and should have focused on AI instead. This comes at a challenging time for Intel, with financial difficulties and the recent retirement of CEO Pat Gelsinger.

TSMC Founder Criticizes Intel's Business Strategy

"I don't know why Pat resigned... Compared with AI, he seemed to focus more on becoming a foundry... Of course now it seems that (Gelsinger) should have focused on AI. They currently have neither a new strategy nor a new CEO. Finding both is very difficult." - Morris Chang via Reuters

Chang's comments highlight the shift in market dynamics. Intel's foundry business, Intel Foundry Services (IFS), has yet to gain significant traction, and its upcoming 18A node's future remains uncertain. Meanwhile, competitors like AMD and NVIDIA have established strong positions in the AI market, while Intel's Gaudi AI accelerators have struggled to generate comparable revenue.

With Gelsinger, a strong proponent of Intel Foundry, now gone, Intel's future approach is uncertain. The company may prioritize its manufacturing business and potentially de-emphasize its chip ambitions.
