Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter, XDefiant, is shutting down in June 2025. Insider Gaming reports that the decision comes due to low player counts and a lack of player spending, issues Ubisoft has acknowledged in recent financial reports. The news was revealed in an internal company meeting.
The closure follows recent struggles for Ubisoft, including the disappointing launch of Star Wars Outlaws and the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows. The shutdown will reportedly lead to layoffs at Ubisoft's San Francisco studio and supporting studios, with some staff already receiving severance information. The San Francisco studio is expected to close completely in February 2025.
Season 3 will be XDefiant's final full season. A skeleton crew will maintain the game until its closure date. Executive Producer Mark Rubin announced on X (formerly Twitter) that servers will remain active until June 3, 2025. Refunds will be issued to Ultimate Founder's Pack owners and players who made purchases within the last 30 days.
New downloads and player registrations are now closed. More information about the closure is available on the official XDefiant website
