The Biden administration is planning to strengthen export controls on China by implementing new policies designed to close existing "trade loopholes". These measures aim to curb the flow of AI hardware to China and maintain US dominance in the AI sector.
The US-China trade war is escalating, with both nations revising policies to restrict each other's exports. Despite previous US restrictions on exports to China, Chinese organizations have found ways to circumvent them, mainly due to policy loopholes.
New Policy Focus
According to a report from SCMP, US lawmakers, led by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, are moving to close these loopholes with new policy revisions. The primary goal is to control the export of AI accelerators to China, ensuring that the US retains its edge in the AI market. These new restrictions are likely to target countries that the US is currently allowed to trade with, such as India, Malaysia, and Singapore.
China is actively promoting domestic production and taking action against US-dominant companies, like NVIDIA. The trade war will likely intensify further once President-elect Donald Trump takes office, given his known “tariff policy."
