Early benchmarks of AMD's new Radeon RX 9070 GPU have surfaced, showcasing surprising performance in Call of Duty Black Ops 6. The initial results indicate that the new card can compete with NVIDIA's RTX 4080 series, without relying on upscaling technologies.
Impressive 4K Performance
IGN had the opportunity to test the Radeon RX 9070 at AMD’s CES 2025 booth, using the onboard benchmarking tool in Call of Duty Black Ops 6. The results revealed the RX 9070 achieved 99 FPS at 4K resolution with Extreme settings enabled, without using FSR or other upscaling technologies.
Competing with NVIDIA RTX 4080 Series
These initial benchmark results suggest the Radeon RX 9070 is a strong competitor in the high-end GPU space, rivalling the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 series despite being targeted for the "70-class" market. This performance is especially noteworthy considering the testing was done without refined drivers and RDNA 4-optimized software.
Driver Issues and Potential
During testing, IGN noted some visual artifacts and bugs, similar to those seen with Intel’s Arc B580 GPU. These issues are likely due to the test environment using unoptimized drivers, and it is expected that these will be resolved with finalized drivers in the near future. It's likely that, with optimized drivers and the use of upscaling technologies, the RX 9070 would be able to deliver significantly higher frame rates.
