AMD has officially unveiled its RDNA 4 GPUs, the Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9060 series, marking a new direction for the company by targeting mainstream offerings from NVIDIA and Intel rather than the ultra-enthusiast segment. These GPUs boast significant upgrades, including support for FSR 4, next-gen AI capabilities, and improved ray tracing.
AMD RDNA 4 Architecture
The RDNA 4 architecture features:
- Optimized Compute Units
- Supercharged AI Compute with 2nd Gen AI Accelerators
- Improved Ray Tracing with 3rd Gen Raytracing Accelerators
- Better Media Encoding quality
- 2nd Gen AMD Radiance DisplayEngine
The new GPUs will be based on a 4nm process node and use a monolithic die design, moving away from the MCM design of RDNA 3.
AMD Radeon RX 9070 & RX 9060 Series
The initial lineup includes:
- Radeon RX 9070 XT: Competes with the RTX 4070 Ti.
- Radeon RX 9070: Competes with the RTX 4070.
- Radeon RX 9060 series: Competes with the RTX 4060 series.
The RX 9070 series will feature up to 16 GB of video memory. AMD has also simplified its naming scheme to align with its Ryzen 9000 series CPUs, so the 9070 indicates an NVIDIA "70" class competitor, while the 9060 indicates an NVIDIA "60" class competitor.
Both the Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 9070 will be available in reference and non-reference designs from various AIB partners, including ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, PowerColor, XFX, ACER, Sapphire, Yeston, and Vastarmor.
AMD FSR 4
RDNA 4 GPUs will support the new FSR 4 technology, which is AMD's first fully AI-based upscaling solution. It offers high-quality 4K upscaling, similar to NVIDIA's DLSS and Intel's XeSS, with additional performance via FSR's Frame-Gen and lower latency through Anti-Lag 2. FSR 4 will be supported across all games with FSR 3.1 integration, including the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
AMD Adrenalin AI
AMD is introducing a new "Adrenalin AI" utility within its Adrenalin software suite, allowing users to generate images, summarize local documents, and ask AMD-related questions. This toolset provides a personalized and local AI experience.
More details about AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs will be released soon.
