Corning's Gorilla Armor 2: Where Strength Meets Clarity
Corning has just announced its latest innovation in protective glass technology: Gorilla Armor 2. This new glass is not just about strength; it's about combining that strength with superior display clarity, claiming to be the industry's first scratch-resistant glass-ceramic with anti-reflective properties designed specifically for mobile devices. The new tech has already made its debut on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.
A Leap in Display Protection
According to Corning, “Gorilla Armor 2 is a groundbreaking achievement in glass-ceramic technology, merging unprecedented durability with stunning display clarity on smartphones.” This is a significant step up from previous generations of protective glass, setting a new standard for the industry.
Enhanced Durability and Resilience
The new Gorilla Armor 2 boasts significantly improved durability compared to the first generation of Gorilla Armor, which was used in the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Corning claims that the new glass is much more resilient to the usual wear and tear of everyday use, and much better than previous Corning designs at handling drops on rough surfaces.
Superior Anti-Reflective Properties
In addition to its remarkable strength, the Gorilla Armor 2 also greatly reduces surface reflections both indoors and outdoors, leading to a better viewing experience in diverse lighting conditions. This is a crucial feature for anyone who has ever struggled with screen glare.
Lab-Tested Performance
Lab tests reveal impressive performance metrics:
- Drop Resistance: Gorilla Armor 2 can survive falls from heights up to 2.2 meters (about 7.2 feet) onto a surface that replicates concrete. Competing glass-ceramic materials failed drop tests at just 1 meter.
- Scratch Resistance: The new glass is 4x more scratch-resistant than other anti-reflective, lithium-aluminosilicate glasses.
Exclusive to Samsung?
For now, it is not known whether Gorilla Armor 2 will be used in devices other than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Considering the fact that the original Gorilla Armor was exclusive to the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the new tech might be exclusive to Samsung as well, at least initially.
